Lara Maroof is an experienced litigator, having been called to the Bar of England & Wales in 2001, and to the Turks and Caicos Bar in 2012. While
in England, Lara had a busy practice specialising in Criminal Defence and Human Rights cases. Since commencing practice in the Turks and Caicos Islands, Lara has built a strong reputation as being a powerful, determined litigator with meticulous attention to detail. She is vastly experienced in a
broad range of practice areas including criminal defence, divorce, civil disputes and all matters relating to employment. She regularly appears in the
Magistrates, Supreme and Court of Appeal of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Lara has also been involved in a number of challenges to the constitutionality of laws in the Turks and Caicos Islands. In 2019, Lara successfully
challenged the legality of the mandatory minimum sentence under the Firearms Ordinance. The challenge led to the law being amended by the
Legislature, to ensure that it complied with individual rights under the Constitution of the Turks and Caicos Islands. In 2021, Lara obtained leave to
appeal to the Privy Council in England; which is the court of final appeal for the British Overseas Territories; in a murder case. The appeal will be
heard before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in December 2022.
Lara is a member of the Criminal Law Sub-Committee of the Bar
Council of the Turks and Caicos Islands, as well as the Sentencing
Guidelines Committee of the Turks and Caicos Islands. She is a
permanent resident of the TCI, where she resides with her husband
and two children.
